What do you need to Film Your Equestrian Sessions with PIXEM 2?

Products Pixem 2

Whether you're preparing for a show, improving technique, or just want to watch your progress, filming your riding can be incredibly valuable. With PIXEM 2, you can do it hands-free — no cameraman needed! This blog will help you to select what you need.

What’s PIXEM 2?

PIXEM 2 is an auto-follow robot cameraman that tracks you indoors or outdoors with precision. It keeps you in the frame, zooms automatically, and films smoothly — using either your smartphone/tablet or a camera, depending on what works best for you.

PIXEM 2 uses radio triangulation to follow your movements in real time. Just place three beacons around your arena, wear the provided radio tag and the robot will rotate and zoom automatically to follow you.

You can use PIXEM 2 with:

  • Your smartphone or tablet
  • A camera

You'll also need a tripod with a 3/8 screw. This is standard, in all countries, but most tripods have another standard screw which is 1/4. Some users have a tripod with a 1/4 screw and they add a 1/4"-3/8" adaptor but it is less steady.

Smartphone or Camera?

Filming with a Smartphone or Tablet

  • No camera needed — there’s a PIXEM 2 + tripod pack made especially for smartphone users ? Check it out here
  • Great image quality, especially on newer models
  • Uses the free PIXEM Camera App for filming, auto-zoom, and live streaming
  • Compatible with most iOS and Android devices (just search “PIXEM” in your App Store — if you can download it, you're good to go!)

Filming with a Camera

  • Ideal if you're aiming for professional-quality videos with better image quality than smartphones, especially in low light
  • Full control of auto-zoom and recording when using supported Sony or Canon models
  • Requires a micro SD card in the camera which is provided in this pack along with the camera SONY AX43A.

Recommended Camera Models

Any camera weighing up to 2.5kg can be mounted on the PIXEM 2 robot using the standardized 1/4" screw.

With one of the compatible cameras, you will benefit from automatic zoom and remote control of the record from the watch, or from the free smartphone/tablet PIXEM CAMERA app. The list of supported models is updated regularly here, they are mainly SONY and CANON cameras.

Note that Panasonic, JVC, and some other camcorders don’t have any plug to control their zoom and their record. Same for DSLRs and GoPro cameras. They can be used on PIXEM 2, but without the auto-zoom and without the remote control of the record.

Among the best camera models available this year are the SONY AX43, AX53, and AX55, all offering excellent 4K image quality.

How Long Can You Film?

The PIXIO & PIXEM/beacons/watch battery life is about 2h30 to 3h30. Your Sony or Canon camera may have between 1h15 and 4h depending on its battery. You can increase the battery life with 4 “power banks”: plug them into the PIXIO robot and the beacons, and you can use them during about 5 or 6 hours with 3000mAh power banks, and 10 to 14 hours with 10000mAh. Of course you will need several watches (one is used while the other is charging), and several batteries for the camera. With PIXEM, it will depend on the autonomy of your smartphone but of course you can also plug a power bank to it to have a longer autonomy.

Also helpful:

  • Extra watches so one can charge while the other’s in use
  • Extra camera batteries

Live Coaching with PIXEM 2

Live streaming lets people watch you online (like YouTube or Facebook), but it often has a delay of 10 to 60 seconds. That’s fine for sharing, but not great for real-time coaching.

Live coaching means real-time video with instant feedback — no delay. That’s where PIXEM 2 really shines!
